These sultana scones are easy to make and are a classic part of an afternoon tea. If you're feeling experimental, golden syrup or lemon curd make a great alternative to jam.Time and servings

Ingredients
- 75 g of sultanas
- 60 g of caster sugar
- 1 tbsp of baking powder
- 450 g of plain flour
- 230 ml of semi-skimmed milk, plus extra for brushing
- 1 spoon of whipping cream, per scone
- 1 spoon of jam, to serve
- 1 egg
- 60 g of butter, cubed
Method
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas 6.Step 2
Sift the flour and baking powder into a bowl. Add the butter and rub into the flour with your fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs.Step 3
Stir in the sultanas, sugar and then the milk to form a soft dough.Step 4
Lightly dust a clean surface with a little flour and roll out the dough to a 2cm thickness.Step 5
Using a 7cm round fluted cutter, stamp out 12 rounds. Arrange on a baking tray and brush the tops with a little milk. Bake for 25 minutes until well risen and golden.Step 6
Serve with jam and whipped cream.
