There was a time in history when popes were resident in Avignon, possibly lured by the superb wines being made there. They were certainly a bit smitten with the local wines and not surprisingly the wines became known as Vin du Pape. Then John XXII built the famous Châteauneuf du Pape, which translates as 'the Pope's new castle' and the symbol and new name for this intensely fruity red was sealed. Made from the Grenache grape, it's rich, intense and a little spicy, giving a mouthful of deeply satisfying berry flavours. Try a glass, with our blessing of course, with gamey meats like beef or venison in a rich sauce or even a tangy mature Cheddar. This is a wine that's fine for vegetarians and vegans too.
