Product Information

A layered and vibrant red named after a key green project, the planting of 10,500 Spekboom bushes on the vineyard’s open grounds. An incredible native plant, otherwise known as the 'elephant bush', it significantly absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere, far more so than any other plant.

Brand Marketing

Founded in 1996 by the Gabb family, Journey’s End is the most southerly planted vineyard in the Stellenbosch wine region, nestled among the picturesque Schapenberg Hills, beneath which lay 350 million year old decomposed granite soils. As well as fantastic views, the vineyards benefit from the cooling and cleansing south-easterly wind, known locally as the ‘Cape Doctor’, which comes in from nearby False Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

Journey’s End focus on expressing this incredible terroir, while preserving the natural environment and wildlife with a sustainable approach to farming and all winemaking activities, as well as being a force for good in the local community.

History

Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is a popular red wine. Though the spiritual homeland of this red grape is France, South Africa has the fourth biggest plantings of Syrah in the world, making up 10% of total vine plantings in South Africa and the second most planted red grape in South Africa. The Gabb family purchased their first vineyards in South Africa in 1995. Since then, they have always been wholly committed to sustainably and ethically producing excellent wines for all occasions.

Regional Information

The location of the Coastal Wine region and its proximity to the Atlantic coast and False Bay keeps acidity in the grapes and prolongs the ripening period. 50% of the blend comes from this region. The other 50% is from the Swartland region, where vineyards are spread throughout this unique region with its varying landscapes and climates. This production area results in a range of wines that are hard to beat not only for their quality but also for enormous diversity.

Vinification Details

The grapes were hand-picked in the early morning. The grapes were then fermented at 8 °C for 3 - 5 days, the tanks were then heated to 18 °C and inoculated with yeast. The fermentation temperature was allowed to peak at 28 °C and then brought down to 24 °C After malolactic fermentation the wines were given a low sulphur dose and left on the gross lees for 3 months. The wine was then racked, blended and returned to barrels. Bottling was done with a fine sheet filtration.
