Really hard
These split peas just don’t seem to cook no matter what you do?! I won’t be buying them again
Great
I made a pease pudding with them, it was delicious. Soaked them overnight and cooked them with other ingredients for 2 hours. Yellow split peas do take a long time to cook.
max
I agree with other reviews that they are a bit crunchy but, I soaked over night in boiling water and tsp of bicarbonate soda, and were fine
Not tasty but addition to variety of dishes
Decided to try them after reading the reviews and thought they were nice. Not tasty but nice. They’re a slightly waxy than floury variety, so hold together well when cooked. They made a good potato salad with a plain, spicy or herby mayonnaise. Or added to a salad combination with a tasty oil based dressing with lemon juice and/or herbs added. They were a good addition, cooked whole with skins left on, in a hearty chicken vegetable soup, and with the skins left on diced, halved or quartered in a potato and spinach curry. To me they didn’t taste creamy as one review stated and on their own I didn’t think they were tasty. But zhooshed up with herbs and spices or added to soups or stews, yeah, they’re good.
extremely hard peas!
I have made yellow split pea soup many times, but for the first time from these split peas that, according to the packet, don't require any soaking and only about half an hour's cooking. But whatever I do, I get crunchy soup! I even soaked them overnight and have cooked the soup for as long as three hours -- and the split peas still have a very distinctive crunch! I won't be buying them again as I don't expect they will ever get as soft as I would like them to be.
Bullets !
At the time of writing this review this product had two 5 star ratings & 1 good review. I could not believe this & had to double check I was reviewing the same product as these yellow split peas are truly awful. I am not a novice cook so I like to think that I know what I'm doing as I love cooking. The first time I cooked with them I followed the packet instructions to the letter including "no need to soak" & they were as hard as bullets & the food was ruined. The 2nd time I used them I thought I'd give them a long soak overnight, same result, bullets! Last night I thought I'd give them one final chance as it would be a waste to throw them away. So this time I soaked overnight again & used them in a recipe which required them to be cooked in a slow cooker for 6 hours, surely after all that they would be fine I thought?! Oh how wrong I was! Even after all that time soaking & cooking they were still not soft enough. Although they weren't hard & crunchy this time they were still semi crunchy & not even al dente. So I give up they've had their chance & they blew it,or should I say bullet? For me personally this is a terrible product that I will never be buying again & what I have left will be going in the bin!
