Microwave for Best Results
This has transformed my ability to rustle up mac n cheese quickly for my daughter. I mix the powder and milk then microwave for 2 minutes, stiring halfway. This way it thickens up nicely, otherwise it was way too runny. I agree adding plenty of cheese on top makes a massive difference.

A Simple Base For a Quick Cheese Sauce
Quick and easy to whip up a cheese sauce, but not very tasty or cheesy without some additions. Grated cheese (Red Leicester or Double Gloucester to give it a rich golden colour), chives, parsley and a pinch of onion & mustard powder take it to another level and much closer to the homemade real thing. Lovely in cauliflower & broccoli cheese. A cupboard staple for a simple, quick cheese sauce base.
