Product Information

Lovers of big red wines will adore this Pinotage. The grape comes from a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. It delivers a deep red wine full of forest fruit and plum lushness with a chocolatey finish that's great with red meats and sausages.

More about this product;

Pinotage is South Africa's flavourful answer to Pinot Noir but it was very nearly the wine that never was. In 1925 Professor Perold at Stellenbosch University crossed the robust Cinsault grape with Pinot Noir, a difficult grape to grow. He planted the seeds, then got a new job, left and promptly forgot about them. The garden became overgrown and the fledgling vines seemed lost forever. Fate stepped in in the form of a young professor who rescued the vines just as a team of gardeners arrived with shears. The first wine was produced in 1941 and what a beauty this style has turned out to be. A complex wine with a fantastic history, it really is one not to be missed.

History

The inspiration behind The Best wine collection comes from our wine experts, who are passionate about sourcing exceptional quality wines from the world's finest wine producers. Like this Pinotage made in partnership with Riebeek Valley Wine Co in South Africa's up and coming Swartland region. We use a very small portion of oaked wine in our blend to give a little creaminess to the vibrant, dark berry flavours for which Pinotage is justly famous.

When Archbishop Desmond Tutu dubbed South Africa 'the rainbow nation' he wasn't kidding. Not only is it culturally diverse, it has more species of plants than just about anywhere else on earth. Winemakers know better than anyone the importance of protecting this complex environment and the care and attention they show their vineyards shines through in wines packed with a rainbow of flavours.
