Our 10 Year Old is the original Laphroaig. A distinctive character that still holds true to the spirit of Ian Hunter, who first created it over 75 years ago. That bold, smoky taste, followed by a hint of seaweed, with a surprising sweetness and long finish, has made Laphroaig the pinnacle experience for Islay single malt.

Excellent peated whisky!
First off, this is a heavily peated whisky. A general rule with any peated whisky - don't buy it unless you've tried it before and you know you like it. There's always so many bad reviews from fools who think you can pick up a bottle of single malt and it will be to your taste. Peated whisky is a very acquired taste, but for those who like it, it's truly heaven on earth. Personally I adore peated whisky, and Laphroaig 10 for me is the benchmark (much like Glenfiddich 12 or Glenmorangie 10 for non-peated whisky). It's time in the cask has made it a nice smooth dram; not quite as smooth as the likes of Ardbeg 10, but still good. It is extremely aromatic and pungent - you can always tell when someone is drinking a dram of Laphroaig as you can smell the distinct tarriness from the other end of the room. Some peated drams stay quite quiet on the nose and don't reveal their secrets until they hit the tongue. Others can be deceiving - I have a bottle of Ledaig, the Tobermory peated expression, which smells like creme brulee and mashed potato on the nose - not a hint of peat until it hits the tongue. But not Laphroaig. Laphroaig screams peat from the second the whisky leaves the bottle. Even though Laphroaig is not the most peated whisky around (that honour goes to Ardbeg), I do think the peated flavours are at the forefront of the palate and are highly prominent, which can make it seem more peaty than the likes of Ardbeg. I believe this to be aged in Bourbon (although Laphroaig do make sherried 10 year old releases) - it has lovely warm, sweet, vanilla and caramel undertones. There is some fruitiness too, particularly citrus fruits and tropical fruits. The peat brings out prominent tastes of a damp forest floor, smoked kippers, liquid bonfire and a hint of iodine. Being a coastal distillery, there is plenty of saltiness in the dram too, it really helps to enhance the peaty flavours, and balance the sweetness, making for a really pleasant and balanced dram. The finish is smoky/tarry and lingering. I think this is a great peated dram, it is often on offer around £28-£30 a bottle, which is excellent value and well worth it for the 10 years it's spent in the cask. If you are willing to spend a bit more, the Ardbeg 10 can occasionally be found at around £40 and that really is an excellent dram.
First and Last
Would you recommend this to a friend? Not if you valued their friendship. Probably the worse whiskey I have ever tried, leaves an aftertaste like antiseptic mouth wash. Save your money there are much better whiskies on the market in a lower price range.
Pay your money and take your choice . .
I met Laphroaig at a free tasting many years ago and it immediately became my favourite affordable whisky. There is only one better but it is expensive. I just like single malt Islay whiskies for their specific taste et al. What more need one say?
Lovely stuff
It's a smoky Islay malt. Not to everyone's taste on account of the strong peaty smokiness, and the Select edition is better, but this is a good introduction to the style. Very different to the sweeter malts so be aware and don't knock it back unless you like a strong hit.
whisky review
I was given a free sample and asked to review it. Im not a whisky expert it tasted like whisky and was fine. I wouldn't pay £40 for any whisky though
You will love it or hate it
To me it tastes like an oak log that has been set on fire then put out with TCP. It smells just like it aswell. Its definitely not to my liking but I do know people who love it. . So if you like your drinks to taste like a log fire in a hospital go for it.
