Our Traditional Irish Soda Bread
Ingredients
500g/approx. 1lb Soda Bread Mix
350ml - 400ml/12 fl oz - 14fl oz cold milk
Flat Baking sheet or 18cm/7" round cake tin
Top Tip...
Milk other than cow's milk can be used but may produce a lighter crust colour when baked.
To Make
1. Pre-heat oven to 400°F/200°C/Gas 6.
2. Empty half the contents of the pack 500g/approx. 1lb into the bowl.
3. Add sufficient cold milk and mix to form a soft dough.
4. Knead the dough a little on a floured surface and turn the smooth side up.
5. Cut a cross over the top and place in a floured 18cm/7" cake tin or place on a floured baking sheet.
6. Bake for 40 minutes approximately. When baked the bread will have a hollow sound if tapped on the base.
7. Cool on a wire tray. A tea towel wrapped over the bread at this stage helps to give a softer crust.
Enjoy!
