Product Information

A delicious red wine made from a blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan, Grenanche Noir and Cinsault. This rich, smoothly-textured wine is full bodied and complex with raspberry and mulberry fruit flavours, complemented by a hint of spice. The blend is a new world nod to French-style wines and is created from wines grown in the granite rich earth of the fashionable, up-and-coming region of Swartland in South Africa. Enjoy at room temperature with lamb and rosemary, or South African bobotie or braai'd (bbq'd) red meats.

History

In 1948 Swartland Co-operative was established with 15 members. The chairman on the newly formed co-operative donated 4 hectares of his own farm Doornkuil to be used for developing the winery. Today, Swartland Winery produces approximately 2 million 9 litre cases of wine a year from grapes supplied by producers across an area of 3600 hectares.

Regional Information

The Swartland name originates from a description of the indigenous "renosterbos" or rhino bush, which appears to turn black, ("Swart" in Afrikaans), during the summer months. This hot, dry climate has an average temperature range of 25°C to 35°C and an annual rainfall of 450 mm and 600mm, but the altitude of these vineyards creates a cool oasis in this arid landscape. Minimal intervention and environmentally friendly farming practices are paramount.
